Neem is used widely in Ayurveda for its medicinal properties since thousands of years. English name for Neem is Margosa. Here are some simple applications of neem which make it very useful in day to day life.
Neem as Antidiabetic
Aqueous extract of neem leaves significantly decreases blood sugar level and prevents adrenaline as well as glucose-induced hyperglycaemia.
Antifungal properties of Neem
Fungal infections which are mostly found on skin, hair and nails. Extracts of neem leaf, neem oil seed kernels are effective against certain fungi candida, ringworm, yeast infections etc. Neem leaf contain two medicinal compounds: gedunin and nimbidol, which have been clinically proven to control these fungi.
Antiinflammatory properties of Neem leaves
Neem leaves contain a chemical called nimbidin which act as an anti inflammatory.
Neem as an Anthelmintic
Neem leaf juice is useful in expelling intestinal worm followed by purgation. It is effective against roundworm, threadworm and pinworm infestation.
Pinworm causes itching and irritation around anal region in children and in adults also. In this condition neem leaf juice is very effective.
Antibacterial properties of Neem
Neem has antibacterial properties. Oil from the Neem leaves, seed and bark possesses a wide spectrum of antibacterial action against Gram positive and Gram negative microorganisms. Clinical study shows that Neem has significant effect on several bacterial strain like salmonella typhosa, streptococcus pyogenes, staphylococcus aureus, E. coli.
Neem seed extract are used to make ointment and drops for eyes and ears because of its antibacterial property.
Antifertility Activity
Neem oil can be used as birth control. Several studies has shown that neem oil appears to be a safe and very effective contraceptive. Neem oil act as spermicide and reduces the chance of fertility. Intra-vaginal application of neem oil, prior to coitus, can prevent pregnancy. It could be a novel method of contraception.
As Insecticide
Neem oil is used in preparation of insecticide. Azadirachtin chemical is found in neem which acts as insecticide.
